Kenya: Tennis - Burundi Sisters Dominant

Nairobi — Sisters Aziza Butoyi and Sakina Nshimirimana of Burundi dominated the Mombasa Sports Club Labour Day tennis tournament finishing first and second in the girls' under-18 singles category Sunday.

Butoyi and her younger sister, Nshimirimana, both of Sadili Oval and both beneficiaries of the ITF Tennis training centre in Pretoria, met in the final with Butoyi carrying the day 6-7,6-4.

In the semi-finals, third seed Butoyi upset top seed Shufaa Changawa of Mombasa Sports Club 7-5, 6-1 while Nshimirimana also upset second seed Lynn De Souza of MSC 6-0, 6-2. Shufaa, who was also seeded top in the under-16 category, however, recovered to qualify for the final of the under-16 category after beating Terry Odera 6-1, 6-1 in the semi-finals. She was due to meet second seed Lynn De Souza in the final later Sunday. De Souza defeated Paige Mbugua 6-1, 6-2 in the other semi.

Abigael Tarte- Hart of Loreto Nairobi won the under-eight category title after beating Yashvi Radia 4-0, 4-2 in the final. Top seed Damaris Musera of Nairobi lifted the girls' under-12 title after beating fourth seed Cheryl Roser 6-0, 6-1. The girls' under-10 finals could not be played after the finalists, Cheryl Fouoso and Memba Waitherero, travelled back to Nairobi. Wendy Chen, who was seeded top in the under-14 category, won the title after beating Paige Mbugua, who was seeded second 6-0, 6-1. In matches played earlier Coast's tennis sensation Shufaa Changawa was given a scare before registering a hard won narrow victory over Wendy Chen from Nairobi as the Mombasa Sports Club Labour Day Junior tournament entered crucial stages at the MSC tennis courts. The victory in this girls under 16 category enabled changawaa who is highly tipped to win the title to advance to the semi finals.

Changawa who is still fresh from winning the Mombasa Sports Club chairman's nite best overral tennis player trophy came from behind 5-7 and won the ensuing sets 6-3,10-4. She however had an easy time in the girls under 18 category when she defeated Toral Shedani 6-1,6-1 to advance to the semi finals. In the girls under 10 category,Diana Wamunye defeated Cate sedani 4-0,4-1 to advance to the semi finals where she was programmed to meet Memba Waitherero who had beaten Selin Sabwa 4-0,4-0.

In the other girls under 10 category match, Shenile Fouso beat Catherine Lukalama 4-1,4-0. In the under 14 category, Damaris Musera beat Cheril Roser 6-2,6-1 while Paige Mbugua defeated Sheril Olaka 6-1,6-0. In the boys under 10 category, Joel Mbuvi defeated Jammaine Luvembe 6-3,3-6,10-4. ends
