Soldiers have been deployed to Bonny, headquarters of Bonny local government area following the killing of five police officers by militant youths.

Governor Rotimi Amaechi, said this yesterday when the management of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) visited him at Government House, Port Harcourt.

He said the deployment of the soldiers will assist in stabilising the security situation on the island which is home to most of Nigeria's oil and gas facilities.

Describing the events in Bonny that led to the death of the police officers as a security lapse, Amaechi said government was committed to the safety of lives, property and investments on the island.

He added that the state government was doing its best to address the security situation in Bonny and other parts of the state.

While calling on corporate organisations in the state to partner with the state government in developing the communities, the governor urged the NLNG management to do more in maintaining peace and promoting security on the island.

He blamed the economic difficulties in the Niger Delta region on the problem of food insecurity and unemployment, saying "those who are working with us in the oil and gas sector must partner with us to provide security in the area."

Earlier, the out-going Managing Director of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG), Dr Chris Hayes, commended Governor Amaechi for confronting security challenges in the state.

Dr Hayes explained that even though the company was operating in challenging times, the NLNG has improved its production capacity from three production trains to six in the last few years.
