Kenya: Elders to Weed Out Fake Refugees

5 May 2008

Nairobi — Village elders will vet internally displaced people to expose imposters who have been living in camps for the past three months.

Molo MP Joseph Kiuna said at the weekend that most of those opposing the closure of the camps were not genuine post election violence victims. The MP said that from today, all the 15,000 internally displaced people who have been camping in Molo will be transported to their farms in military lorries.

Farm inputs

Mr Kiuna said the victims will be vetted by elders so that they can benefit from the resettlement programme.

The families will be provided with food for work, drugs and farm inputs. Meanwhile, the government says it has no intention forcing the displaced to return to their farms. Rift Valley Provincial Commissioner Hassan Noor Hassan said resettlement had started at Kipkelion. He dismissed as misleading reports by a section of the media that the government would use force in resettling the displaced.

Speaking in Molo, the PC said the resettlement will start tomorrow in Molo, Trans Nzoia and Cherengany.
