DAIRY premises that do not meet standards will be closed down effectively. Dr. Nathan Twinamasiko, the head of the Dairy Development Authority, told the Uganda Veterinary Association in Wandegeya recently that time was up for unhygienic milk outlets.

"We are going to close down milk outlets that do not meet livestock standards," he insisted.

Twinamasiko disclosed that because of increased demand for the product, the rate of contaminated milk had shot up.

"People are using wrong tools to process and store milk. Consumers should buy milk from licensed outlets that meet standards."

The recommended outlets should be located 15 metres from the road.

And the interior should be well designed, furnished with tiles and ventilated with stainless equipment.

The premises should have sufficient water to maintain the hygiene, refrigeration and owners examined medically.

Twinamasiko said milk was one the main products that alleviate poverty.

It also improves the health of the owner, he asserted.

"The pastoral communities have all their life lived on milk for survival," Twinamasiko, assured the veterinary professionals.
