UGANDA has received an ultra-modern machine to test vaginal bacteria infections faster than the ones in the market. BD Affirm was launched by Ebenezer clinical laboratory last week.

The machine is fast and the first of its kind in the country according to Mary Muthigani, country manager Hass Biotechnological Centre Kenya, the suppliers of the new machine.

BD Affirm is a microprobe processor for the identification of Candida SPP, Gardnerella vaginalisis and Trichomonas vaginalisis which are the major causes of bacterial vaginal infections in women.

These diseases are a main cause of reduced sexual libido among women, poor reproductive rates and increased risk of HIV. Stephen Kiyimba-Kaggwa, the director Ebenezer Clinical Laboratory said BD Affirm gives results in 45 minutes, cutting the time of getting results from 72 hours by the older machines.

He said in 2007 they tested 407 patients and were able to detect 10 bacterial infections, but on acquiring the new machine they tested 110 patients in a month and detected eight bacterial infections of the patients tested.

At the same function, Ebenezer launched the BD Bactec a machine that is used for blood culture. Blood culture is rapid detection and identification of bacteria, yeast and fungi in blood.

The two machines cost about sh34m, a cost Kaggwa said was high. He urged the Government to reduce the taxation of laboratory equipment to enable private enterprises acquire modern equipment.
