Liberia: Brumskine, Philip Banks Support Information Bill

Monrovia — The first partisan of the Liberty Party (LP), Cllr. Charles Walker Brumskine and Justice Minister Cllr. Philip A. Z. Banks have assured Liberian journalists of their fullest support to the long awaited information act expected to be passed into law.

Addressing a special Edward Wilmot Blyden Forum organized by the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) in commemoration of World Press Freedom Day held in Monrovia, Cllr. Brumskine said he would engage some lawmakers in a professional manner to see reason in passing the bill into law.

Each year on May 3, Journalists around the World celebrate the day to reflect on their colleagues who lost their lives, humiliated or injured during the performance of their duties and functions.

The theme of this year's celebration "Freedom of Expression, Access & Empowerment," brought together hundreds of local journalists together who marched through out the principal streets of Monrovia.

In a related development, the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) as Part of celebration marking World Press Freedom Day honored several journalists and media institutions.

The Analyst Newspaper was named Newspaper of the Year, Star Radio; Radio Station of the Year, Real TV; Television Station of the Year and Radio Tapitta; Community Radio Station of the Year. Truth FM Breakfast Show was also named as Talk Show of the Year.

Those honored at the ceremony held at a local resort in Monrovia were Bruce Bowen of Star Radio; Judicial Reporter of the Year, Moses Kowo; Legislative Reporter of the Year, Vivian Gateh; News Caster of the Year and Ekena Wesley; Feature Writer of the Year.

Others were Winston Weeks, Photo-Journalist of the Year, Jonathan Palelah; Stringer Correspondent of the Year, Momolu Dolley; Sports Journalist of the Year

Cllr. Brumskine praised the Government of Liberia for its tolerance in freedom of expression by ordinary citizens and recalled the assaulting of some local journalists by state security while performing their duties.

As for Justice Minister Philip A. Z. Banks he said he was prepared to participate in the Blyden Forum to dialogue and debate the issue in an orderly manner for the good of Liberians.

In his presentation, the minister called on media practitioners to engage in research work in order to obtain balance reporting and credibility in the eyes of the public. He said his Ministry will cooperate with the Liberian media for prosperity.

Explaining further, Minister Banks stated that come what may, he will remain constructive in handling media reports when the need arises.

Also speaking, the Deputy Minister for Public Affairs at the Ministry of information, Mr. Gabriel Williams, cautioned Liberian Journalists to remain steadfast in performing their duties.

He assured them of his fullest cooperation in working with journalists indicating that as a media practitioner he would not forget his roots.
