Maputo

The Mozambican Interior Ministry is worried about obesity in the police force, a phenomenon that has been on the increase in recent years.

Commenting on the probable causes of the "degeneration in the physical condition" of the policemen, Deputy Interior Minister Jose Mandra mentioned the lack of physical exercise, abuse of alcohol and tobacco, and also the advanced age of a good number of police.

He claimed that surplus body fat may represent an obstacle to the good performance of the policemen in their mission to guarantee the welfare of citizens.

The most visible characteristics of this "degeneration of the physical condition" of policemen, said Mandra, "is a very large belly, and some seem to be in the final stages of pregnancy"

Mandra was speaking during a ceremony to close the second upgrading course for police officers, which took place at the Police Basic Training School in Matalane, about 30 kilometres north of Maputo. The course took 30 days and was attended by 107 agents, eight of are women.

On the occasion, Mandra noted that some of the police officers were now looking leaner. He claimed that participants in the course upgraded their skills for better performance in their mission to prevent and fight against crime.

He explained that retraining actions are not any kind of disciplinary punishment, but an activity that will cover all police officers.
