Liberia: GSM Customers Want Dialogue With LTA

GSM subscribers have called for dialogue between four GSM companies (Lone Star, Comium, Cellcom and Libercell) and the Liberia Telecommunication Authority (LTA).

The GSM subscribers are calling on the four companies to dialogue with the LTA for the sake of smooth business atmosphere.

The request comes at the time when a row is growing between the four GSM companies and the LTA, the regulatory body for all GSM companies in the country.

Recently, the LTA informed the GSM companies to apply for the purpose of standardization. Each company has been asked to pay an amount of US$2.5 million per annum and 25% of this amount be paid before receiving their standardization document.

According to the LTA, the application form costs US$150,000. The LTA has also given an ultimatum for this payment or be shut down.

On the basis of that, several GSM subscribers, who spoke to this paper at the weekend on the ultimatum and the growing row with the LTA called for dialogue and amicable settlement.

"As for me, I think that the LTA has the authority to close down any GSM company that does not want to abide by the rules. But equally so, we need to handle this with care. In every business, there is a need to give and take. If you close down the GSM companies, which mean you are brining darkness to the country," Othello H. Kollie said.

He said government does not have its own telecommunication company that subscribers would rely on when they shut down GSM companies.

Miata Johnson, who subscribes with two GSM companies said, she was happy with the LTA decision to remove the conditional clause which talked about rejection or acceptance.

"I would like to see President Sirleaf intervening into this whole LTA matter. I think these companies are here to invest, and it would be good if LTA and the GSM companies dialogue on these issues.
