Armed bandits Saturday, May 3, shot dead a businessman, Jonathan Mbacham, at his Monte Jouvence residence in Yaounde.
The incident took place after the bandits broke into the man's house through the window at about 2 am.According to the late man's wife, Mrs. Clara Mbacham, they were jolted out of sleep by a bang when the thieves destroyed the door of their room and stormed in.
She said although they surrendered all the money they had and the key of their car, the bandits insisted on opening fire and unleashed two bullets into her husband. As Mbacham bled profusely and screamed in agony, the bandits refused to allow him to be taken to the hospital. Mrs. Mbacham said she only took her husband to the hospital after the bandits had left.
The late man's younger brother, Isaac Mbacham, said Jonathan was first taken to the Biyem-Assi District Hospital and later to the Yaounde Teaching Hospital. In both hospitals, there was no doctor and no nurse sympathetic enough to take emergency measures to stop the excessive bleeding of the victim.
They arrived at the Central Hospital too late as the man gave up the ghost before the doctors could effectively attend to him.The bandits tried to frighten away people who live near the victim's house by firing several shots into the air. One of the neighbours said they called the Rapid Intervention Police, but they came only in the morning after the damage had been done.
Before leaving, the two of the bandits raped a 16-year-old girl. The girl, names withheld, said the bandits threatened to kill her if she did not give in. At press time, the police in Mendong neighbourhood were reported to have arrested one person suspected to be one of the bandits who killed the 43-year-old Mbacham who leaves behind a wife and children.
Late Mbacham was the proprietor of a printing press known as CONGESET.Observers are astonished that bandits are operating hitch-free even with the heavy troop deployment in Yaounde. Two weeks ago, thieves did a clean sweep of property at the residence of varsity Don, Dr. Njila at the Damas neighbourhood.
The CPDM MP for the Momo constituency, Hon. Francis Enwe, who went to Mbacham's house shortly after incident, told The Post that what finally killed Mbacham, was negligence of the nurses who were on duty at the various hospitals.
The MP called on the authorities to slam sanctions on such nurses because they have caused the death of many citizens and will continue to do so.
