The Fako Divisional Delegate of Commerce, Emmanuel Tchuakio, has said the shortage of staff, inadequate funding and other variables have been a handicap to their efforts at enforcing commodity prices recently fixed by the government.

Tchuakio said they are finding it difficult to make retailers and wholesalers abide by government's regulated prices of commodities like cement, rice, flour, sugar among others.

The Delegate was speaking to the press in his Limbe office, Wednesday 30, during a promotional sales exercise of some of the above-named goods aimed at sensitizing the public on the various fixed prices.

During the exercise, a 50-kg bag of rice was selling at FCFA 13,650 and another, of a slightly higher grade, at FCFA 15,000, meanwhile, a 50-kg bag of flour was selling at FCFA 19,500 unlike FCFA 25,000 by some traders in the market.

Tchuakio said the idea was to let the public know exactly what the government regulated prices were.As to how they have been procuring the goods, he said they came from some retailers and wholesalers in town.

As to why it was difficult in causing the rest of the traders to respect the government prices, the Delegate said from their findings, the retailers complained of some wholesalers in Douala who have refused to heed to government's call for them to sell in respect to a protocol agreement reached between the state and wholesalers.

He said it was for this reason that some of the wholesalers in Limbe and elsewhere in Fako were still finding it difficult to bring down their own prices.Besides, he said other retailers were being influenced by news of the global trend in the rise of prices of food stuff.
