Kumbo Council in Bui Division will henceforth manage the main water supply in the locality hitherto controlled by the Kumbo Water Authority, KWA.
Kumbo Council Mayor, Donatus Fonyuy Njong, disclosed the information, Friday, May 2, at the Council Chambers during an ordinary session devoted to the deliberations and adoption of the 2007 Administrative/Management and Stores Accounts.
He said a memorandum of understanding on the Kumbo Water Authority. has been signed between his council and the Nso Cultural and Development Association, NSODA.
"By this memorandum, the Kumbo Water Authority is now under the aegis of Kumbo Council.
This is a milestone which fits very squarely within the functions devolved on councils following law no 2004 / 18 of 22 July 2004 to lay down rules applicable to councils," the Mayor said.
The taking over of Kumbo Water management by the council, many believe, will put an end to the litany of problems that have plagued water supply under KWA.It would be recalled that the Kumbo main water supply was realised in the 1970s through a Canadian government grant. The project was later taken over and controlled by the National Water Corporation, SNEC, which was, however, chased away in the early 90s.
A local management committee was then instituted to run the facility. This was characterized by numerous problems including water shortage, and exorbitant bills.
Recently, the Fon of Nso, Sehm Mbinglo I, and KWA patron, summarily dismissed the KWA Manager, Rudolf Shey Ngah Foncha, for alleged financial impropriety.
The Mayor also announced that the Local Council Support Fund for Mutual Assistance, FEICOM, had approved a town hall project worth FCFA 187, 000, 000.According to the Mayor, the hall will comprise a conference hall, offices and a rest house. Construction work is expected to commence as soon as tender procedures are completed, said the Mayor.
Other projects include the eucalyptus replacement programme, the Bio Gas Farm Project, both to be realised in collaboration with the Delegation of Forestry and Wild Life and SHUMAS, a Bamenda-based NGO.
