The Meme chapter of the Cameroon Association of English Speaking Journalists, CAMASEJ, has presented awards of excellence to some deserving persons in Kumba.

This was part of celebrations marking the World Press Freedom Day at the Kumba City Council Hall on May 3.

Among the beneficiaries were; Caven Nnoko Mbele, Government Delegate to the former Kumba Urban Council for his outstanding achievement for the Kumba Municipality, Dorothy Etah Takang, Directress of the Kumba Women Empowerment Centre, who was awarded for human resource development, Dr Zachs Ebongo Nanje, ophthalmologist of the Kumba District Hospital for his services to humanity.

Also, Prince Emmanuel Ntoko Ntoko, Chief of Centre of the National Social Insurance Fund, CNPS Kumba, was awarded for instilling sanity and order at institution. In his address at the occasion, the President of CAMASEJ Meme, Richard Shengang, disclosed that the maiden award serves as a pacesetter for subsequent ones to recognize people who have in one way or the other served the community. According to him, the laureates were chosen after journalists conducted an opinion poll.

"We hope that the recipients embrace this as an additional challenge for them to redouble their efforts as much is expected of them" the President stated. In a discourse on the World Press Freedom Day, Meme Communication Delegate, Tafong Tchitchi, said the press is honoured for its vital role in the promotion of human rights and the strengthening of a democratic situation.

However, he lamented that journalists are killed, tortured, harassed, threatened and jailed because of their job.He stated that Government has initiated several actions that go a long way to promote press freedom in the country, but decried the lack of professionalism, non-respect of the law and ethics and sensational and bias reporting.
