The government will facilitate students in tertiary institutions to procure laptop computers to enhance usage of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in the country.

State Minister for ICT Alintuma Nsambu said university students will acquire the computers at the cost of US$300 (about Shs600,000) a price below the selling price at the local market.

"You become absolutely useless in future without knowledge of using a mouse and a keyboard or typing," Mr Nsambu said.

Mr Nsambu said the computers currently being manufactured in the United States would be distributed under a project named 'Every student initiative' that will start in four weeks time.

Mr Nsambu said the project to cost US$1.2 million will be implemented with support from United States.

He added that the project will benefit all students but St. Lawrence University will be the pioneer beneficiary with 5000 computers already requested by the administrators on behalf of the students.

Mr Nsambu made the remarks while presiding over St. Lawrence University Competitions entitled; "Beauty by works" held at Lugogo in Kampala on Saturday. According to Mr Nsambu, a laptop computer costs an average of US$1000 (about Shs1.7 million) and beyond.

He said the computers will ease the government policy of promoting sciences and ICT in the country.

Two students were crowned for Mr and Miss St. Lawrence University after exhibiting the most impressive talents, creativity, productivity and character in implementing business plans out of the 13 competitors.

The students exhibited projects like restaurants, salons, environment, ICT, clinics, culture and jewelry in line with the varsity's theme of 'Entrepreneurship and ICT'.

The Chairman Board of Trustees at the University, Prof Lawrence Mukiibi, said the initiative, first of its kind in the country aims at empowering students with the spirit of self-innovation.

He described the 'Beauty by Works' as a move from the existing beauty pageants of outward appearance to expression of someone's skills in reality.
