UGANDA Revenue Authority (URA) and Celtel have partnered to rid hazardous material from Kampala central business district. The campaigned dubbed "Waste wise" was launched by the water and environment minister Maria Mutagamba last week.

Yesse Oenga, the Celtel managing director, said the drive initiated by URA was geared towards enforcing the Government's ban on the use of polythene bags.

"Celtel is providing financial and logistical support to ultimately protect and conserve the environment," said Oenga at the launch at Lugogo, near Kampala.

"Today is a landmark occasion because we are engaging on issues to deal with the environment and its an event that Celtel is proud to be associated with," he said.

"The objective of this campaign is to create social consciousness among the community that lives within Kampala," Allen Kagina, the head of URA, said.

Mutagamba urged URA and the National Environment Management Authority to put stringent measures on the use of paper bags.
