HIV/AIDS testing and counselling volunteers in Mukono district have received assistance worth sh52m to enhance their activities. A total of 48 volunteers living positively with HIV, known as Network Support Agents, carry out door-to-door counselling, mobilising and sharing information about HIV.
The assistance included 48 bicycles, six motorcycles worth sh22m and cheques of sh30m. They were given to the volunteers on Friday at Mukono resort Hotel.
Ivan Byamukama, the finance and grants manager from the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, said they trained the group to empower fellow patients.
"We have trained these people to counsel and mobilise fellow patients so as to reduce stigma and to build their confidence to live positively. We will also establish HIV/AIDS support centers at every health center IV in Mukono to take services near the patients," he said.
The volunteers are divided into six groups: Kimera network, Mirembe PH group, Kawolo network, Asiika Obulamu, Sikyomu development group and Katonda Mulungi.

Each group leader received a motorcycle and the 48 members received a bicycle each. The groups also shared the sh30m.
Mukono district chairperson Francis Lukooya Mukoome said there were many people, especially on Buvuma Island, who do not know about anti-retroviral drugs that enable patients live longer.
"The district is trying to stock anti-retroviral drugs in our heath centers but many HIV/AIDS patients do not know that the drugs exist," Lukooya lamented.
