Speaker, House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole yesterday urged African leaders to provide solid foundation for democratic institutions in the continent.

Bankole made the call in his speech to the 9th Pan- Africa Parliament (PAP) session which opened yesterday in Midrand, Johannesburg.

He said that African leaders should work out modalities that would effectively promote human and peoples' right and consolidate democratic institutions.

He urged the Parliament to strive to live upto the expectations of Africans as enshrined in its constitution.

"The Parliament should promote human and peoples right, consolidate democratic institutions and democratic culture and good governance, he said.

Bankole said it was also expected to ensure transparency and observance of the rule of law by all organs of the union, regional communities and individual member states.

He further urged PAP to ensure that it addressed the current food crisis and conflicts in some parts of the continent.

"This parliament must come up with measures to fight the food crisis in Africa and the post election crises in Kenya and Zimbabwe.

The speaker also called on the African heads of state to fight unemployment, eradicate poverty and ensure food security. "We the parliament must be well positioned to handle the problems affecting the continent. We must come up with concrete measures to fight diseases such as HIV and AIDS and malaria.

"To achieve relative peace and security in Africa, Heads of African government should endeavour to fight institutionalised corruption in their countries," he said.

He pledged the cooperation of the National Assembly to the realisation of these objectives as well as creating a common front to tackle these issues.
