FIVE armed men on Sunday night battered a 55-year-old woman in Lusaka's industrial area until she became unconscious.

The men, brandishing three guns, broke into a house at Kalumba and Sons Company near the Post Newspapers factory on Chandwe Musonda Road around 19:30 hours and stole K500,000 cash and three mobile phones.

The woman, identified as Ester Chisanga Kalumba, is admitted to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) and was still unconscious by Press time.

Hospital staff confirmed the admission of Mrs Kalumba who they said was likely to be transferred to the Intensive Care Unit.

Mrs Kalumba was married to a former UNIP central committee member, the late Robinson Kalumba.

Narrating the ordeal at UTH yesterday, a daughter, Idah Kanyimbo, said the gunmen broke into the house through her cousin's bedroom and demanded to know where her mother was.

One of them hit Mrs Kalumba's son, Mwaba, 22, with a gun butt before he agreed to lead them to the lounge where the mother and her sister were.

The gunmen grabbed Mrs Kalumba and dragged her to her bedroom.

"All the thieves went into the room, she had passed out. We suspect that it is an inside job because the place is very secure," Mrs Kanyimbo said.

Meanwhile, a man of Lusaka's Chilenje Township who at the weekend set his wife ablaze in unexplained circumstances has died.

UTH public relations officer, Kennedy Makukula, said the man, identified as Robert Makwamazi, was burnt in the fire that killed his wife.

Mr Makwamazi died around 04:00 hours yesterday.

And a 14-year-old girl from Chipata, in Eastern Province, who was hit by a stray bullet has died.

The girl, identified as Ruth Kamanga, was referred to the UTH from Chipata District Hospital with a bullet lodged in her neck.
