INSPECTOR General of Police, Ephraim Mateyo has with immediate effect dispatched a platoon of paramilitary officers to Livingstone to reduce the recent incidences of crime in the area.

Mr Mateyo said the paramilitary officers would work closely with the local officers under the supervision of Southern Province commanding officer, Lemmy Kajoba.

This is aimed at ensuring that crime was reduced.

He said in Lusaka yesterday that the service was committed to ensuring that crime was reduced.

He said the police had an obligation to safeguard people's lives and their property through enhanced contemporary policing and embracing the community as partners in crime prevention and monitoring.

And police in Livingstone have intensified patrols following continued reports of people being attacked by a gang.

Southern Province police chief, Lemmy Kajoba said foot and motorised patrols had intensified in the tourist capital.

Mr Kajoba has since called on Livingstone victims of violent attacks to report to the police as that would help the service to target the trouble areas.

Mr Kajoba complained yesterday that it was not in order for people to cause alarm by reporting the attacks to other people other than the police.

Last week, Southern Province Minister, Daniel Munkombwe addressed security personnel, appealing to them to contain the rising crime following reports he had received from residents that they were being attacked.

On Saturday, some more victims of such attacks stormed Mr Munkombwe's office showing injuries inflicted on them.

The victims, some with broken jaws, deep head cuts and body wounds, were accompanied by Freedom ward councillor, Fines Chidakwa, who produced documents from Livingstone General Hospital as evidence which showed 28 admissions in seven days.

Mr Kajoba also wondered how the hospital could have treated the victims without police reports as per procedure.

He said several police officers had been deployed to patrol the city, but wondered how crime could have been going on amid the patrols.
