THE Government must be commended for acting promptly, and with resolve in dealing with the streak of violent crime in Livingstone which was threatening the tranquility of the town.

The dispatching of a special police detachment to Livingstone by Inspector-General, Ephraim Mateyo reaffirms the Government's commitment to stamping out crime and acts of banditry in the country.

Livingstone is one of the key economic centres because of the tourism industry that is synonymous with the town, as well as other industries.

The Government has committed itself to nurturing and protecting all investment that comes to Zambia.

Bands of misguided criminal elements cannot be allowed to derail or jeopardise Zambia's investor-friendly atmosphere through their banditry.

The most vulnerable will be the economy which is likely to suffer from any perceptions of lack of safety for personnel and enterprises.

Production as well as service provision would be severely affected because both output and demand would be affected.

This is why, even as the Government effects measures to protect the citizens of Livingstone and return the life of the city to normalcy, all Zambians must join in the fight.

The citizens of Livingstone in particular need to come together in combating this new scourge.

Crime anywhere will never flourish when pitted against a united and vigilant front of public-spirited citizens. This is what Livingstone residents can contribute to the fight.

It is important that the people of Livingstone work closely with law-enforcement agencies by providing all the necessary logistics as they embark on this urgent task.

It is likely that some of these criminals actually live within the local communities in Livingstone.

These bandits have already severely maimed several local residents through savage attacks. Some of the attacks have left the victims fighting for their lives in hospital.

It is inconceivable, therefore, and a stark act of inhumanity that a citizen could abet and support such acts.

If there are any residents involved in the banditry, they will have themselves to blame when the law catches up with them.

It is also crucial at this juncture that beyond the support for the Police action in Livingstone, the residents of Livingstone exercise utmost patience with the police, given the circumstances.
