ZAMBIA recognises the important role the regional centre for the promotion of democracy and good governance plays in enhancing peace building and development.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Kabinga Pande said the Zambian Government had been engaged in consultations with stakeholders to identify most suitable premises to house the regional centre.

Mr Pande was speaking in Lusaka yesterday when he opened an inaugural thematic cluster workshop for the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) on Democracy and Good Governance being attended by 11 countries.

Mr Pande said the workshop was important two years after the signing of the pact on security, stability and development on the Great Lakes Region, which was held in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2006 by Heads of State of core member States.

Zambia was the chosen to host the regional centre for the promotion of democracy, good governance, human rights and civic education.

The minister said Zambia recognised the important role the regional centre would play in the enhancement of peace building and development in the region.

He said the Great Lakes Region had gone through some of the most trying moments that included genocide and other conflicts due to insufficient democratic institutions and values.

Mr Pande said with the signing of the pact, ideals of promoting democratic values and institutions had become priorities on the agenda of the Great Lakes Region.

He was happy that the workshop intended to achieve common understanding and the implementation of individual projects and protocols on democracy and good governance.

The minister said there was need during the workshop to try and bring projects and protocol on democracy and good governance in consonance with the prevailing conditions and requirements of 2008.

Mr Pande challenged the participants to consider assessing and evaluating the actual state of affairs of the projects with regard to their implementation.
