Nigeria: Traders Call for Early Payment of Workers' Salaries

6 May 2008

Mr. Ifeanyi Donald, the chief executive officer, Makwud Electronics, has urged the Federal Government to ensure early release of federal budgets to minimise delays in the payment of workers' salaries.

Donald made the call on Saturday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the old parade ground, venue of the on going Abuja International Trade Fair.

He said early release of budgets would aid the growth of the economy as traders who sell items needed by workers would be patronised.

He said he was recording poor sales at the trade fair because workers were complaining that they had not been paid salaries.

"There is high demand for electronics by the people who come here but they lack the means to acquire them," he stated.

Donald said Abuja was a city, which was inhabited mostly by civil servants, adding that when there was delay in payment of salaries, "things usually grind to a halt."

He said the high cost of food items in the country was also contributing to the low patronage for goods such as electronics.

Another electronics dealer, Mr. John Nwodo, who is participating at the trade fair, also called on the government to pay workers their salaries on time.

He said most traders depended on workers for patronage, asking "so if they don't get their salaries, how do we sell our electronics?"(NAN)
