The Nigerian Army has reiterated its commitment to the country's sports development.

Lt.-Gen. Luka Yusuf, the Chief of Army Staff, told reporters at a press briefing on the forthcoming squash festival, that the army would continue to play a leading role in sports.

Yusuf, however, said it would be unable to do it without the support of corporate organisations and state governments.

Yusuf, who was represented at the briefing by Major-Gen Sunday Chikwe, General Officer, Commanding 81 Division, Lagos, said the "Squash Festival" was aimed at taking the sport to all parts of the country.

He said the mini versions of the competition currently holding in the six Army formations of the country, confirmed that squash was not only popular among soldiers but also among civilians.

He said the top eight men's singles and four veterans were expected to represent each

formation at the national finals at the Aguiyi-Ironsi Cantonment from May 19 to May 24.

The six formations are 1 Division, Kaduna, 2 Division, Ibadan, 3 Division, Jos, 81 Division, Lagos, 82 Division, Enugu and Army Headquarters Garrison, Abuja.

"The Grand Finale will also include a Nigerian Army female singles event," he said.

Top Nigerian male and female players from various parts of the country will thrill enthusiasts at the grand finale.

Yusuf said the army was getting assistance from the Nigeria Squash Rackets Federation to facilitate the participation of the various states associations in the festival.
