Tunisia: Major International Biotechnology Symposium Opens in Sfax

From May 4 to 8, 2008, the city of Sfax will host a major international biotechnology symposium which is jointly organized by the International Biotechnology Engineering center (ICGEB), the University of Sfax and the Tunisian Union of Industry, commerce and handicrafts (UTICA). The venue is the exhibition hall of the Sfax International Fair.
The program includes papers on 'biology and human health', 'biotechnology, microbes and the environment' and 'biotechnology, agriculture, food and sea products'. Other issues dealt with, will include innovative biotechnology.
The symposium which is held on the occasion of the 25 th anniversary of the Sfax Center of Biotechnology, will gather some 780 researchers, including 380 specialists from abroad, representing some 40 countries.
In his opening address made on Sunday, Mr Ridha Ben Mosbah , the Secretary of State to the Minister, in charge of scientific research and technology, highlighted Tunisia 's achievements in the field of scientific research , noting that the country today has some 33 public research institutions , 139 research laboratories and 643 research units, in a addition to 15,833 full- time researchers.
He also stressed the need to focus on 'local ' areas of interest such as 'abiotic stress" in cereals which are part of Tunisia's basic food commodities, as well as on the need to improve seeds and plants to make them more resistant to salinity and water scarcity.
