The project will cost FCFA 24.2 billion to be financed by the Korean government.

The project for the construction of three vocational training centres in the country will soon be a reality in Cameroon. The second meeting of the pilot committee set up for the purpose took place in Yaounde yesterday. Organised by the Ministry of Employment and Vocational Training (MINEFOP), the meeting brought together representatives from partner ministries and associations in charge of the training of youths and development. The meeting was presided over by the Minister of Employment and Professional Training, Zachary Perevet. Since the putting in place of a pilot committee for the construction of vocational training centres in 2005, with the help of the government of Korea, experts from Korea have paid several visits to Cameroon and several studies have been carried out. Yesterday's meeting was an occasion for the Human Resources Development Service team to present the content of a feasibility study of the project.

According to the presentation, the sites for the construction of the centres have been identified in Douala, Limbe and Sangmelima. The Douala training centre will be constructed on the old site while the surface area of Sangmelima (five hectares) and Limbe (six hectares) have already been known. The project is expected to last for four years (2008-2011). Since the centres will be organising intensive professional training, the training duration will be one year for regular courses and three to nine month for short term. The total number of trainees per year is expected to be 1,320 candidates. The candidates are expected to have graduated from the first cycle of secondary education. The training trades of the different centres will be electricity, automotives (including heavy vehicle engine), wood work, welding, plumbing, office automation, hotel management and tourism, dress making and design, multimedia, repairing farm machines, mechanics, among others.

The cost of the project stands at (US $ 48.4 million) approximately FCFA 24.2 billion to be financed by the Korean government. Cameroon government is expected to pay the sum of (US $ 13.4 million) approximately FCFA 6.7 billion with land and infrastructure, operation and maintenance and local tax and customs included. According to the Minister, the project will give an opportunity to train young Cameroonians who will be capable to help improve the economic sector of Cameroon. He said the project will be extended to others parts of the country.
