Liberia: Care-Amputee Embarks On Training Amputees

A Local Liberian NGO, which is geared towards catering to amputees in the sub-region and beyond has embarked on the first phase of envelops and paper bag-training program for 12 amputees, which would last for a period of three months.

The training program, which is currently taking place on 10th. Street in Sinkor, would improve the skills of the beneficiaries to be useful and productive in society after the course.

According to a statement from Care-Amputees, which quoted its Executive Director, Fonati Nagbe, said the amputees, like any ordinary human beings, need care. "Now that the war is over, we need to accept them and empower them to become useful," Director Nagbe said.

The Care-Amputee boss said that though the amputees have benefited from sporting activities in and out of Liberia; there is a need to develop their minds to enable them earn a livelihood.

She added that it is disheartening to see amputees loitering in the streets and begging for handouts and as such, there is a need to empower them with skills.

She said her organization would not only embark on the first phase of the training but that it would organize series of training programs and activities for the amputees to get them off the streets and engage in meaningful activities that would make them productive and self- sustaining.

Ms. Nagbe then used the occasion to encourage female amputees to participate in the second phase of the program following the completion of the first phase.

Meanwhile, the Care-Amputee Director is appealing to international organizations to assist her Care-Amputee financially to enable the organization achieve its goal of training amputees in making them productive.
