Monrovia — Grand Kru County Acting Superintendent Benedict Sayeh has stressed the need for more support for HIV/AIDS education for rural community dwellers in Liberia.
Mr. Sayeh said HIV/AIDS is an enemy to human kind because the disease destroys life more than arms.
"We need to unite our efforts to combat this deadly disease; we need education about HIV/AIDS because AIDS has no cure. AIDS undermines social and economic security, reduces income and increases poverty," Sayeh said.
Mr. Sayeh made the statement recently at a one day AIDS workshop organized by Restore Our Children's Health (ROCH) in Barclayville, Grand Kru County.
He said the workshop was important because it will help rural dwellers to learn the causes of the pandemic, apply the preventive methods, as well as caring for those living with HIV virus.
He appealed to the Liberian government to take concrete actions in order to improve the livelihood of the people.
"The government should take concrete action to keep our boys and girls in school; improve the health delivery system, and put in place mechanism intended to grow more food to feed ourselves," he told the participants.
Mr. Sayeh observed that poverty and food insecurity are major factors that are spreading AIDS especially among rural communities.
He praised ROCH for organizing these activities in Grand Kru and thanked National Aids Control Program and UNAIDS for their assistance.
The workshop which brought together 48 participants from seven communities in Barclayville District was held at the J. J. Dickson Memorial United Methodist Church.
