Liberia: 'I Was Gang Raped' - Woman, 36, Recounts Experiences

Monrovia — A 36-year old woman who claimed to be barren as a result of being raped has recounted how she was gang raped by fighters of the defunct National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL) in 1993.

Madam Martha Sackie told the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) public hearing recently in Voinjama City, Lofa County, that several NPFL fighters, under the command of former rebel general, only identified as.Fayah in 1993, forcefully had sexual intercourse with her.

Sackie: "I was arrested while escaping scene of fighting between NPFL and LPC forces near Bong County, when general Fayah ordered his fighters to rape me."

She said the fighters forcefully undressed her and took her to the forest where she was gang raped, one after another.

Madam Sackie sorrowfully indicated that her husband, who was with her at the time she was raped, later abandoned her because of her inability to have children. She explained further that following the rape, her husband took her to several clinics to clean her womb.

"Despite all the medical treatments I've received, I am still unable to have children. I am appealing for medical assistance..." Madam Sackie pleaded.

The victim said due to this problem her new relationship usually complained about her inability to have children for him.
