Liberia: Expulsion, Suspension Hang Over Lawmakers

Monrovia — Credible sources have hinted that the committee set up by the House of Representatives to probe bribery allegation involving some lawmakers has finally recommended the expulsion of Bong County Representative Samuel Bono and the suspension of three others.

The sources narrated that Representatives Saah Gbollie, Kertikumenhn Murray and Rufus Gbeor would be suspended for six months each and would forfeit their salaries and other benefits.

The sources further hinted that the committee is expected to report its findings to plenary today.

Additionally, the probe committee is said to be pondering on punishment to institute against former Speaker Edwin M. Snowe who accused his colleagues of taking bribe to remove him.

The investigation also revealed that some of the accused are said to be shying away from their colleagues as well as staying away from their offices apparently to avoid punishment.

When contacted, the Director of Press at the House Isaac G. Redd denied that findings into the bribery allegation would be made available today.

According to criminal procedure law, section 12.50, "a person has committed bribery as second degree felony, if he knowingly offers, gives or agrees to give to another or solicits, accepts or agrees from another, a thing of values as consideration for, is punishable under the law by 15 years imprisonment.
