Angola: Country Records Growth Rates Above World Average

6 May 2008

Luanda — Angola has been growing at a higher rate than the average recorded in Africa and the world, thanks to quality of the programmes the Government has been implementing since peace was achieved in the country.

This was said Tuesday in Luanda by Angolan Planning minister, Ana Dias Lourenço.

The minister was speaking at the VI Conference of Authorising Officers of the Africa Portuguese Speaking Countries (PALOP), East-Timor and European Commission (EC), in her quality as national authorising officer of the European Development Fund (EDF) for Angola.

According to Ana Dias, as a result of this economic growth, the country has been attracting the interest of potential international investors.

"The good macro-economic environment, translated in the low inflation rate, in the consolidation of the budget expressed in the global surplus balance of fiscal accounts and international net reserves corresponding to over four months of imports, characterise the current state of the Angolan economy," she stressed.

In her address, the minister mentioned the guarantee of macro-economic stability, the rehabilitation and construction of infrastructures and the combat of famine and misery as the main challenges of the Angolan Government.

"This is not only because the results are encouraging, but also because they constitute basic conditions for a sustainable economic development and improvement of the populations living standards," she also said.

The VI conference of national authorising officers is analysing the accomplishment of the decisions and recommendations from the meeting held in 2007, in Lisbon (Portugal), the programming of the cooperation within the framework of the 10th EDF in the 2008/2013 period, and the evaluation of the situation of projects underway within the framework of the 9th EDF.

The previous meeting recommended the conduction of a study, meant for the identification of areas of intervention that include good governance which, in line with the understanding reached, shall constitute the main area of cooperation among the PALOP, East Timor/EC for the 10th EDF.

Established in 1958 with the purpose to implement the dispositions of the Rome Treaty, the EDF is funded by the member countries and is meant for a financial assistance to the Africa Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries with which the European Union has relations within the framework of the Lome Convention.
