Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola has charged members of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) World Under-17 Youth Championship (WYC) to uphold the confidence reposed in them.

The sports loving governor made the charge during the inauguration of the 16-member LOC of the Lagos Sub-seat of the championship in Lagos.

"You should see this call as a call to serviceand you must be ready to discharge your duties without fear or favour", he said.

He pledged the full support of the state government for the committee to enable them carry out their assignments, adding that in the next few days, the government would begin to implement the proposals presented to it by the committee.

Fashola also called on the federal government to see the hosting as an opportunity to showcase the country to the international community and correct some erroneous impressions about the country.

He went further: "Apart from re-affirming our commitment to youth development, the hosting will afford us an opportunity as a country to showcase our culture to the international community and disapprove the erroneous impression the outside world has of the country.

"Even the National Assembly should support the programme by making a supplementary appropriation, where necessary assistance to the state is given in its preparation for the championship", he said.

According to him, the hosting will also enable the country to lay a solid infrastructure in sports for the present and future generation of Nigerians. Citing Ghana and South Africa as examples, Fashola said.
