Abuja — Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and its suburbs have lamented the constant increase in the prices of foodstuff. They complained that everyday in the market, foodstuff prices rise higher and are never reduced. "Where are we heading to our naira has no value any longer. Go to the market with N20,000.00 to buy food stuff and before you know it, the money has gone, with only a little quantity of items to show for it," a resident lamented.
Another resident, madam Bokwa, added that: "As you know, without food, human beings cannot live. We have very good fertile land and so many mineral resources in Nigeria, but we are still suffering from lack of food. This is a shame. Government should act before we all die of hunger".
In a chat with our reporter, madam Mariam, another resdient, who sells food beside the Staff Hospital Garki II lamented that, "the most painful thing is that, most of my customers refuse to reason with me. I used to sell a plate of food for N130.00, but now, I'm selling at N150.00, due to the increase in the price of foodstuff in the market. I tell you, sometimes, I feel like crying after the day's sale, I don't make much profit .
She added: "the price of foodstuff is increasing everyday. Even when I write down my list from the house, by the time I enter the market, the whole thing would change; the money won't be enough to buy everything. I would start adjusting to make sure I buy everything. I'm praying to God to help us and change this country to the best level".
In an interview with LEADERSHIP, a school teacher in Nyanya Phase II, Mrs. Comfort Galachima, said: "Since foodstuff price is rising everyday, government should consider some of us who serve as civil servants and increase our salary or find a solution to this food crisis".
Alhaji Musa, who sells foodstuff at the Wuse market, explained to LEADERSHIP in an interview why, in his opinion, prices of foodstuff are rising almost everyday. According to him, it is all due to the policies enacted by the bad leaders who have ruled this country at one time or the other. "Those leaders are self-centered, making things hard for the common man" he said "Nigeria has what it takes to become richer than any other country. But due to the greed of the men, we are suffering today. For example, Nigeria has a lot of good farm lands and mineral resources, but one man will divert hundreds of millions of naira for his own use".
