Nairobi — Power distributors and suppliers across Africa will be converging in Kenya next month for their 16th union meeting.
The parley will bring together 54 members of the Union of Producers Transport and Distributors of Electrical Power in Africa (UPDEA).
Local power distributor, KenGen, is organising and hosting the event scheduled for June 24 to 26 at the Safari Park hotel in Nairobi. Speaking at a media briefing on the preparations, Mr Edward Njoroge, KenGen managing director said that the event would be used as a forum to discuss problems that the industry faces.
"As players in the energy sector, the conference will provide us with a sound platform to share and find solutions to issues affecting the industry," said Mr Njoroge.
Access to power
The theme of the event will be good governance of national power sectors as a key factor for realisation of access to electricity for all the people of Africa.
Also present at the function held at Stima Plaza was UPDEA secretary general, Engineer Tella Abel Didier Edime, who is on a review of the preparation mission. Mr Edime said that during the conference, Kenya through Mr Njoroge, will assume the presidency of the union.
Currently, the KenGen chief executive is the vice president of the union and chairman of the scientific committee. "An increase in consumer knowledge, ability and spending power means that we have a higher demand for electric power per capita income today than in the last decade," said Mr Njoroge. This is the first time Kenya is hosting the UPDEA congress.
