Former Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Mr Haz Iwendi, who died of stroke related illness on Monday, at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Zaria , was in coma for four days before his death.
His close personal aide who disclosed this to THISDAY at his residence, 3 Tafawa Balewa Way, Government Reserved Area (GRA), Kaduna, said Iwendi initially complained of minor ailment last week Wednesday, and was immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment.
The aide made this revelation when the Inspector General of Police, Mr Mike Okiro visited the family over the death.
Sequel to the death, the Nigeria Police Force said yesterday that it had introduced compulsory medical check up for all officers from Assistant Commissioner of Police and above.
Okiro said, "henceforth, ACPs, Deputy Commissioners (DCs) Commissioners of Police (CPs), Assistant Inspectors- General (AIGs) and Deputy Inspectors- General (DIGs) must go for annual medical check up abroad, to certify their health status."

Okiro, while fielding questions from newsmen after the visit, described Iwendi as a sound and dedicated police officer.He said, "this is a very sad occasion. He is one of our very sound and dedicated officers. We are going to miss him, Nigeria will miss him and Kaduna State in particular where he was the Commissioner of Police will miss him so much, because he left an indelible footprint."
Top dignitaries also paid condolence visit to the family of the late police officer, including Deputy Governor of Kaduna State, Mr Patrick Yakowa, who represented Governor Namadi Sambo who is currently in Saudi Arabia for the lesser Hajj, General Officer Commanding 1 Div, Kaduna, Major General Moses Obi, Kaduna State Comptroller of Prisons, A. Momoud, amongst others.
Yakowa described Iwendi as an accomplished policeman who came into Kaduna State and quickly settled to work with government to bring about peace and security.
Late Commissioner Haz Iwendi was one of those dedicated officer that Employer seeks but hardly found. Throughout his time in service he was not found wanting in his duties and would be fondly remembered by all Nigerians. My prayer and thought go out to his family and may his soul rest in peace.
