Students at Maseno University have threatened to go on strike unless a proposal to raise fees is shelved.

The students claimed the proposal was arbitrary and was done in total disregard of their plight and the current economic hardships.

The more than 3,500 Joint Admission Board and 1,200 self-sponsored students are scheduled to pay an additional Sh25,000 and Sh50,000 fees in the next academic year, set to commence in September.

"The administration wants to increase fees behind our back. This is obnoxious," said a second year student.

However, the university's director of public relations, Mr Owen Mac Onyango, insisted that the fees structures made available to the students last month were proposals.

He said the Senate would meet next week.
