The displaced people camping at the Nakuru showground want the State to compensate them before they can return home.

The more than 14,500 refugees vowed to resist attempts by the Government to resettle them until their demand was met.

The group told Nakuru DC Mr Christopher Musumbu, that they should be compensated while still at the camp, without further delay.

"We must be compensated before we leave for our farms," said the group's representative Joseph Kamau.

He said most victims of post-election violence doubted the Government's pledge to compensate them once they moved out of the camps.

Kamau said the displaced did not want to be duped to leave and then fight for their survival from their farms.

"We all want to go back to our homes. But how sure are we that the Government will still assist us?" Kamau asked.

The displaced also said they had no faith in the Government's ability to guarantee their security.

Another spokesperson, Mrs Mary Wanjiru questioned the Government's ability to protect them, saying it had failed to contain the electoral violence.

She wondered why the Government had failed to stop political violence since 1992.

"This time, let the Government convince us otherwise because we are used to these false promises," she said.

The displaced also demanded that DCs and DOs from their regions visit them at the camp to assure them of security.

Meanwhile, the Government will today start verification of refugees at the showground to ensure that only genuine ones are assisted.

"We will conduct a roll call on genuine refugee before compensation lists are released by the Government," said Nakuru DC, Musumbu.
