Uganda: Private University Admissions Start

Kampala — ADMISSIONS for private students in all public universities will start on Friday and close on May 30, according to officials from the Joint Admissions Board.

The private scheme is meant for students who did not qualify for Government sponsorship but meet the minimum criteria, which is two principal passes at A'level.

"Government-sponsored students who are not satisfied with the courses offered to them can appeal to the admissions board or apply for other courses on the private scheme," a source at the admissions board said.

Apart from the Government sponsorship scheme, 800 more will be admitted under the district-quota system introduced two years ago, under which each district is allocated 10 slots. The board will sit next week to consider admissions for students under this system.

All students who want to join the private scheme are expected to pick their application forms from the university of their choice.

Candidates have to present their O'level and A'level certificates as well as birth certificates and identity cards of their former schools.

The list of Government-sponsored students was officially released yesterday at Makerere University.

Students stormed the university notice board at Senate building to check for their names.

There were no changes from the provisional lists which were published by The New Vision on Sunday and Tuesday, a source at the admissions board confirmed.
