Four northern districts of Dokolo, Apac, Oyam, Lira are to benefit from Mukwano Industries Ltd's Eye Camp project, which will see over 500 eye patients getting free surgical outreach.
The iniative is part of Mukwano's Corporate Social Responsibility to their farmers engaged in sunflower production in the Lango sub region districts.
Mukwano Industries Ltd, a conglomerate of business enterprises and promoters of the booming sunflower growing business in the once war ravaged region in conjunction with Lira Referral Hospital, will conduct the exercise, which will run from May 12 to July 2008.
The Managing Director, Mukwano Industries Ltd, Mr Alykhan Karmali said on April 3 that the eye camp is part of Mukwano Agricultural Project (MAP) implemented in 2003 to promote modern agriculture through the introduction of hybrid sunflower seed.
"MAP has created an income generating avenue for over 35,000 contract farmers, which has improved their incomes by 30 percent in the past four years. The project has gone a long way in supporting the government programme of prosperity for all and resettling IDPs," Mr Karmali said.
This is the second eye camp Mukwano will be conducting in the region. The first eye camp treated 120 people, who were holed up in the Internally Displaced Person (IDP) camps.

"Anybody with eye problems should take advantage of the programme," said Mr Edward Wotima, Mukwano's Special Projects Manager.
Mr Wotima further said that the eye camp will be extended to Kiryandongo in Masindi, Pader and Virika in Kabarole. The Pader eye camp will be dedicated to the children.
According to World Health Organisation (WHO), blindness is one of the biggest sources of disability in the world today yet operations are very costly especially among the poor.
