Desré Buirski, the artist best known for designing Madiba's trademark presidential shirts, represented South Africa at the launch event of the iGoogle artist themes project in New York last week. Buirski was one of 60 artists from around the world to design her own theme for iGoogle.

"The iGoogle artists project gives Internet users the opportunity to make their Google homepage as beautiful as it is useful. I am delighted to represent South Africa and have my design available to a global audience," she said.

As part of the launch festivities on 1 May 2008, Buirski's design was projected across the Manhattan skyline, something which made Buirski and the entire local Google office very proud. "First creating a design and then seeing it projected across the skyline of a city like New York is quite mind-blowing," explained Buirski.

Google SA country manager Stafford Masie said the entire local Google team are incredibly proud that South Africa played an active part of this launch.

"It is a great illustration that Google is serious about making the South African users' Internet experience rival that of any other user worldwide, both in terms of content and customisability," he said.

"iGoogle allows Google users to customise their Internet experience, choosing the content that they're interested in seeing. It's an easy way to make the world's information useful and accessible, straight from a landing page," he says.

"Users in South African and across the world can now give their Google homepage a truly South African touch. This is just another sign of our commitment to better serve our users in South Africa," Masie concludes.
