Kenya: Councillors Protest At Transfer of Treasurer

Nairobi — A standoff looms at Mombasa Town Hall over the transfer of the treasurer.

The civic leaders and the Ministry of Local Government are differing over the transfer of Mr Andrew Wanyonyi to Ruiru municipality. The councillors say it would be difficult for them to work with a new person at a time when a number of financial programmes have been put in place for the current year.

Led by deputy mayor John Mcharo, the civic leaders said they had appealed to minister Musalia Mudavadi to have the transfer rescinded. They threatened to snub the incoming treasurer if the ministry went ahead with the transfer of Mr Wanyonyi. The new treasurer is being posted from Nairobi. "The outgoing treasurer who has already been recalled to Nairobi before proceeding to his new station has only worked for one year and we have seen the council make great strides.

"He has fully streamlined financial operations to a point where the council has managed to reduce its debts that stood at over Sh2 billion to about Sh700 million," Mr Mcharo told the Nation.

Activities

He said the civic leaders were only appealing for one more year for Mr Wanyonyi to continue working in Mombasa.

He said they had lined up a number of financial activities among them the removal of all roundabouts in the town, putting flyovers and building a big mortuary with a capacity to take about 300 bodies.
