Windhoek — TWO locomotives collided at Usakos railway station over the weekend while passengers were disembarking from one of the trains.
According to TransNamib spokesperson Ritha Nghiitwikwa, the accident took place just after midnight on Saturday while one of the trains, travelling from Otjiwarongo to Walvis Bay, stopped at the station to offload passengers.
It was then that another train, travelling from Walvis Bay to Windhoek, crashed into the side of the stationary locomotive, pushing some carriages of the moving train off the rails, according to a provisional accident report, Nghiitwikwa said.
No one was injured in the accident, although there was extensive damage to the moving locomotive and several fuel tankers and other railway equipment, she said.
No fuel spilled from the tankers.
None of the passenger carriages were affected and the passengers were transported by bus to their destinations in Walvis Bay and Windhoek.
Nghiitwikwa said an investigation had been launched to determine the cause of the accident and implement safety measures to prevent a recurrence.
