Nairobi — Three people were murdered in different areas of Laikipia East on Sunday and Monday. Two of the killings occurred near Nanyuki Town on Sunday night while the third at Wiyumiririe market was reported Monday.

The killing at Wiyumiririe in Lamuria Division sparked a protest by more than 300 people who blocked the Nyahururu-Nyeri road and demanded Government action against insecurity in the area.

In Nanyuki, police said the two men were abducted from their houses and bludgeoned to death and their bodies dumped on a roadside.

Laikipia police commander Walter Aliwa said the victims were wheat brokers and it is suspected that they were killed by their colleagues after a business deal went sour. The bodies were taken to Nanyuki District Hospital mortuary.

In Wiyumiririe, residents said two people have been killed in the last week, while two others are nursing injuries at Nyahururu District Hospital. In neighbouring Laikipia West District, two traders were shot dead when seven gangsters raided Muthengera trading centre.

Meanwhile, four people have been arrested in connection with last Saturday's raid on a farm owned by President Kibaki's relative.

Shallow grave

Villagers at the weekend lynched a youth suspected to have killed his neighbour and buried her in a shallow grave in Kaorone village, Imenti Central District. In Tigania District, police are looking for a 43-year-old man who escaped arrest from police by scaring them off with a sword and later slashing and killing his brother's livestock.

The man drew a sword and scared off three police officers who had gone to arrest him after he was accused of uprooting his sister-in-law's fence at Kiamaroo village in Muthara Division.
