Angola: Cult - Weaving Art Barely Visible in Angola

7 May 2008

Luanda — The Angolan plastic artist Marcela Costa said Wednesday in Luanda that the lack of exposure of the weaving art in the country is due to the reduced number of artists in this field.

Speaking to ANGOP, Marcela Costa added that this is why this art has a weak dynamism, which does not encourage other people to be interested in plastic arts.

However, the situation of weaving art in Angola is worrying, mainly with the absence of a subject dealing with it in the National School of Plastic Arts (ENAP).

According to the source, the insertion of the referred subject in the ENAP's curriculum will allow the training of new artists and give another dynamic to this art.

Despite this situation, Marcela Costa said that she is determined to give her contribution for the revitalisation of weaving, because she intends to teach this art to children and youths, in her Celamar gallery.

According to the artist, the weavers Lali Salvador, Belmira and Domingas Massocolo have been working to promote the art, admitting, however, that a lot more has to be done.
