The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa (AOB), in the Central Region, Mr. Emmanuel Adjei Domson, has appealed to the government, board members and management of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), to reconsider the fees being charged for the scheme, in order to increase membership.

He also observed that if management, and board members, embarked on intensive public education, the people would understand the benefits of the scheme, and thus help increase its membership, to make it successful.

Mr Adjei Domson made the appeal during the Assembly's first meeting of the year, at Breman Asikuma on Tuesday.

He disclosed that the membership of the scheme in the district, had dropped from 55,871 to 53,684, as at March 31 this year.

He attributed this to the failure, on the part of some registered members, to renew their membership cards.

He also attributed the drop in membership of the scheme, to the payment of a penalty, for delays in renewal, and arbitrary increases in the premium.

Mr. Domson was optimistic that when this was reduced, it would encourage more people to register with the scheme.

He, therefore, called on assembly members to also educate their electorate, to register in order to benefit from the scheme, since the survival of the scheme depended on large numbers.

The DCE disclosed that the District Assembly sponsored a district-wide mock examination, at the cost of GH¢3,289, to improve the performance of the district in this year's Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

According to him, the assembly was poised to exceed its revenue target of GH¢84,725, as it has already collected GH¢30,779, for the first quarter of this year, as against GH¢5,074 collected in the same period last year.

He added that plans were far advanced, to revive the only internet café, and radio station in the district, to enhance Information Communication Technology.

He implored all assembly members, to take advantage of the allocation for Self-Help Projects, to initiate community projects in their electoral areas.
