THE PRESS Secretary to the President, and Presidential Spokesman, Mr. Andrew Awuni, has urged journalists across the country, to play a good leadership role before, during and after, the December general elections.

Stating that the 2008 elections were not elections for political parties, but elections of destiny, Mr. Awuni said journalists had a leadership role to play in directing the path of the country, saying; "destiny has placed the responsibility that journalists should direct the path to a good leadership."

He said the struggle for independence, led by Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was shaped by journalists, and urged all journalists not to sit on the fence, but reflect on the legacies, that the past and present governments had left behind.

"This way, they can educate the society on which one of these governments, deserved to take the reign of the country again."

He said by their writings, journalists shaped opinions and offered leadership.

Mr. Awuni said these, when he addressed media practitioners, at a press soiree in Bolgatanga, during his recent visit up North.

His visit was aimed at explaining the NPP government programmes, which had been implemented over the past seven years.

According to him, if there was any government, that could surpass the Kufuor-led administration, in terms of education, infrastructures, health and all sectors of the economy, then that government was yet to come.

Speaking earlier, on a Bolgatanga based radio station, Rock FM, Mr. Awuni urged the youth in conflict areas, to channel their energy into activities, geared towards the development of these areas, and the nation at large.

He also advised politicians to be wary of whatever they tell the electorate, since any negative messages, could have the propensity of derailing the electoral process.

Mr. Alhassan Samari, Upper East Regional Minister, was of the opinion that, the NPP government had done so well, that the media was unable to highlight it all, and urged media practitioners to seek information on government's policies and programmes, to educate Ghanaians.

The programme was attended by over 20 media practitioners from 12 media houses across the region.
