The Chronicle has gathered that the government, and the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Environment (MLGRDE), are making frantic efforts to pay contractors, who handled projects for the Ghana@50 celebrations.

Sources told this paper that the Chief of Staff, Kwadwo Mpiani, is negotiating with the Ministry on how to generate funds, to pay contractors, who executed various projects earmarked for the 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations.

Mr. Daniel Osei, Coordinating Architect of the Ghana@50 Projects, disclosed this to The Chronicle, in a telephone interview last week Tuesday.

Osei, who was responding to questions on why Ghana@50 contractors had still not been paid, noted that since the projects began last year, contractors, especially those handling toilet projects, had not been paid, due to inadequate funds to pay them, in the 31 stations throughout the country.

He could however not disclose the amount owed the contractors, since according to him, the payments were varied.

He, however, assured the contractors that government was soliciting for funds, and would soon pay them.

The Chronicle has learnt that Ghana@50 contractors have not been paid, despite all attempts by the contractors, to draw the attention of government to the issue.

Sources close to the Secretariat, said the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana@50 Secretariat, Dr. Charles Yves Wereko-Brobbey, wrote to the contractors, some time ago, assuring them that their monies would be paid to them, including all wages and interests, by the end of June last year, but has not lived up to that promise.

The source said the various groups have gone to the Secretariat, and Parliament to register their displeasure, but were told there was no one there.

So far, contractors, who handled the Jubilee Parks projects, are the only ones who have been paid. These contractors are mainly NPP sympathisers.

Government voted US$20 million, and later added US$11million for the celebration, but up to date, the contractors who executed anniversary projects, have still not been paid.
