The Mozambican government is planning to invest about three million US dollars in a project to build filling stations in rural areas powered by solar panels.
The chairperson of the National Energy Fund (FUNAE), Miquelina Menezes, told AIM that, in an initial stage, 20 such stations will be installed in four provinces in the central and northern regions of the country.
"In the beginning, four provinces will benefit of this project, namely Cabo Delgado and Niassa, in the north, and Sofala and Manica in the central region", said Menezes, adding that the study to determine the kind of filling stations to be installed in the districts is practically complete.

The idea is to help improve the quality of life of residents in the rural areas, who will now enjoy easier access to fuel, including kerosene, often regarded as the fuel of the poor.
FUNAE has another project to install about 2,500 solar panel systems in the provinces of Inhambane and Sofala, as part of the programme to electrify the rural areas using renewable sources of energy.
This programme is to benefit about 300 schools and a similar number of health units across the country.
