African power suppliers and distributers, still smarting from criticism over rising cost of electricity in most countries, have shifted focus to addressing key challenges facing the industry.

With experts warning that Africa is rapidly sliding into an energy crunch, the players will be converging on Kenya next month for their 16th union meeting under the auspices of the 54- member Union of Producers, Transport and Distributors of Electrical Power in Africa (UPDEA).

Local power distributor, KenGen, is organising and hosting the event scheduled for June 24 to 26 at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi. This is the first time Kenya is hosting the UPDEA congress, which is a big boost to the country as major player on the continent's energy landscape.

Mr Edward Njoroge, KenGen managing director, said the event would be used as a forum to discuss problems that the industry faces.

"As players in the energy sector, the conference will provide us with a sound platform to share and find solutions to issues affecting us," said Mr Njoroge, who is also the vice -president of the union and chairman of the scientific committee. The theme of the event will be "good governance of national power sectors as a key factor for realisation of access to electricity for all the people of Africa.

Mr Njoroge said there was need for Africa to pool her energy resources to increase the populations' access to electricity, which is key to development and a means to alleviate poverty.

"An increase in consumer knowledge, ability and spending power means we have a higher demand for electric power per capita income today than in the last decade," he said Mr Njoroge.
