The failure of the Super Eagles to make use of the last FIFA free day last month has ensured the country retained her 39th position and fifth best in Africa in the latest world football body's ranking that was released yesterday.

With 20 international friendly matches played on the last FIFA free day, the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) focused itself for the 'must win' Olympic qualifier against South Africa in Abuja which the coach Samson Siasia-tutored team won convincingly to book a ticket for the football event of the games.

Nigeria, with 660 points and 10 points behind Moldova but ahead of Guinea with four points and the host of the last African Cup of Nations, Ghana remain top on the continent with Cameroon, Cote d' Ivoire and Egypt all ahead of the Super Eagles on the ranking.

Argentina remained number one in the largely unchanged FIFA world rankings, with the United States at 21st position.

The former World Champions were followed by Brazil, Italy, Spain and Germany. The Czech Republic, France, Greece, Portugal and the Netherlands completed the top 10.

The only change in the top 20 was Cameroon's jump over Mexico to 16th. No team in the top 50 rose or fell by more than two places.

All six confederations have the same leading team as last month: Argentina, Italy, Ghana (14th), Mexico, Japan (37th) and New Zealand (78th).
