Nigeria: Police Seize Gun From Ekiti d'Speaker

Public Relations Officer of the Ekiti Police Command, Mr Mike Akindipe has disclosed that the force has seized a semi-automatic pump action gun belonging to the the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mr Saliu Adeoti.

Speaking yesterday in Ado-Ekiti , Adeoti told newsmen that the gun with serial number 9495 was loaded with eight cartridges at the time it was seized.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the command on Tuesday quizzed the Speaker of the Assembly,

Mr Olufemi Bamisile and Adeoti over alleged shootings at the Assembly premises.

The duo were interrogated by an Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the Ekiti police command, Sunday Anjorin.

Akindipe said the gun, which was licensed in Akure, was seized, following a confessional statement by Adeoti that he was with it when the Assembly premises was invaded by 13 AC lawmakers.

"I wish to confirm that the Ekiti Police have seized an Magnum Semi- Automatic Pump Action gun belonging to the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly.

"The gun, which was licensed in Akure was loaded with eight cartridges, which suggested that it was loaded during the fracas at the Assembly," Akindipe said.

"Although, the Deputy Speaker said he did not fire any shot at the House, we will use experts to know when last the gun was used," Akindipe added.

The police spokesman said the police had intensified investigations into the remote causes of the crisis at the Assembly NAN reports that the alleged invasion of the House on Monday by the AC lawmakers had forced the Assembly to adjourn sitting indefinitely.
