The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebel leader, Joseph Kony, will meet the chief mediator, Dr Riek Machar, this Saturday on the Sudan-Congo border, his key negotiator, has said.

Speaking in Kampala yesterday, the LRA negotiator, Dr James Obita said his team, traditional leaders and lawyers will travel to Ri-Kwangba in South Sudan on May 9.

This is to brief Kony on the issues he raised regarding the role of the special division of the High Court, how government plans to use traditional justice reconciliation to help him avoid prosecution for war crimes by the International Criminal Court and the safety of the commanders once they disarm.

Talks to end Kony's 22-year insurgency stalled on April 10 when he failed to show up for the signing of a peace agreement.

"We are travelling to Ri-Kwangba before the chief mediator and then he (Kony) will meet Machar on April 10," said Dr Obita, who is in Kampala with members of his delegation for consultative meetings.

"It is from the meeting with Dr Machar that Kony will propose the date he plans to sign the peace agreement," he added.

Among the officials who have been meeting with the LRA delegates are Principal Judge, Justice James Ogoola, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Richard Butera, traditional and local leaders from the insurgency-hit regions and donors.
